Ideas for luxury honeymoons

Honeymoon hotspots & romantic honeymoon hotels

Just how near can you get to paradise? Stay at one of these romantic gems and find out for yourself

Close your eyes. Imagine a lagoon glistening like diamonds in the afternoon sun; picture a lake intensely blue, or maybe a pure-white sand sun-kissed beach. There might be a backdrop of a powder blue sky dotted with fluorescent white clouds, swaying palm trees, or perhaps towering mountains reaching for the sky.

Think of exotic flowers, lush rainforests, crystal clear water, a kaleidoscope of tropical fish, mystical venues, magical moments... honeymoon destinations can be so dreamy, can’t they? Nothing but the best will do for an extra special honeymoon though, so here are a few romantic venues worth considering for that special occasion.

Lord Howe Island is a blissful setting for newly-weds; it sits in the Pacific about 373 miles east of Australia and only 400 guests are allowed on the island at any one time.  Part of New South Wales, the entire island (seven miles long) is World Heritage listed and only a two-hour flight from Sydney so why not combine the two destinations.

Stay at the luxurious and romantic Capella Lodge for breathtaking views of the world’s southernmost coral reef and soaring peaks.  For activities outside the boudoir, take secluded walks in sub-tropical forests, enjoy spectacular snorkelling, and find a private patch of sand on one of the island’s eleven gorgeous beaches.

Wow factor: Watch the sun set in aptly-named Lovers Bay

Mystical, romantic, enchanting... this chic riad, Ana Yela, buried deep in the fascinating old Medina of magical Marrakesh tells a captivating love story. A letter, discovered during restoration of the house, recounts a young girl’s love of the man who captured her heart, and of their rooftop “flight” together on a magic carpet.

This stylish five-room riad with its gorgeous Moroccan decor and mystical ambiance may awaken your spirit and summon peacefulness to mind and body... from the subtle tones of the Tibetan gongs, the romantic lighting, its fine cuisine and superb service, to its cool enchanting inner courtyard with pool and the Berber tent on the sun terrace overlooking the rooftops of Marrakesh. Step out of the ancient door of this exclusive oasis, and back in time, to explore bustling medieval souks and the Atlas Mountains beyond.

Set to become the “St Tropez of the Caribbean” within the next few years, the Caribbean island of GRENADA is being re-invented apace since hurricane Ivan paid an unwelcome call in 2004.

The island offers a diverse landscape, some gorgeous beaches, some classy hotels, a huge marina complex which, when fully developed, will be capable of berthing 350 yachts – a good starting point to sail down the Grenadines perhaps. “Pleasure is a great way to achieve body-mind harmony” is the belief of La Source, a stylish hotel located on Pink Gin Beach with beautiful views across the bay.

The sophisticated Caribbean island of BARBADOS is renowned, but a little gem under the name of Treasure Beach might not be. Located on the gorgeous West Coast this 35-room all-suite hotel sits virtually feet from one of the best beaches on the island.

The suites are surrounded by lush tropical gardens full of birds and blooms, and form a U-shape around the swimming pool: all just a few steps away from the white sandy beach. Dine under the stars, stroll along the beach hand-in-hand at sunset, or just relax in a luxury suite complete with private pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Shaped like a ‘Y’, Lake Como is simply beautiful and known for its splendid old villas and picturesque towns flanking its shores. For an elegant hotel, built in Liberty style in 1910 and beautifully furnished with arts and antiques, head for the Grand Hotel, Tremezzo; it’s got lovely gardens, a dramatic mountain backdrop and a lakeside “floating” pool.

Take the ferry to discover other towns: to picturesque Bellaggio directly opposite for a romantic lunch al fresco at the water’s edge; and up the funicular from the centre of Brunal for wonderful views and to stroll in the mountains.

Wow factor: Stunning panoramic views across Lake Como from the hotel’s elevated gardens

Imagine a view of a turquoise-blue lagoon glistening like diamonds, fringed by a pure white sandy beach; the sound of palm fronds rustling in the breeze, tiny waves lapping the shore, and the song of birds flitting through lush tropical gardens generously splashed with exotic flora. It is difficult to describe paradise. But, imagine this, and you are almost there.

This is what you can expect on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius at the prestigious Royal Palm Hotel - renowned for its haute cuisine, superlative service, and impressive spa facilities. Drag yourself away, if you can, as the island is worth exploring. At the other end of the island, Le Paradis Hotel & Golf Club is a leisure resort offering a livelier environment with nightly entertainment; it’s the same hotel group as the Royal Palm so expect high class accommodation and excellent cuisine.

“Fit for a king and deserving of an emperor” is how the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, describes itself. And it’s true. Opulent, luxurious, majestic... the hotel is vast, built with the finest marble and gold everywhere. You’ll feel like a million dollars here; in fact, there is a lavish Million Dollar Package if you want to splash out on your honeymoon.

Wow factor: The colossal reception dome, not dissimilar to the Royal Albert Hall

Favoured by travellers in search of a romantic getaway promising powder-soft sand and turquoise seas, the Seychelles hold an intoxicating allure to honeymooners, drawn like magnets to the sparkling blue waters, the lush settings and romantic sunsets.

The international airport is on Mahé Island so if you want to island-hop, don’t stray too far from this island. So unwind in paradise and base yourself on neighbouring Sainte Anne Island, just a ten minute boat ride: it’s an unpretentious villa-only exclusive resort set on a private island.
